Wahclella Falls | 2.5 miles | 400 ft of elevation gain | My kids and I love this trail for its creek, many climbing rocks, bridges, and even a cave! And the waterfall at the end, of course. My first recommendation for a family-friendly Gorge hike on the Oregon side.
Catherine Creek Arch Loop | 2 miles | 400 ft of elevation gain | One of many ways to explore the Catherine Creek area. Going in early spring meant the beginning of wildflower season. Views are good anytime of year, and you don’t have to hike far to get a good view.
Pool of the Winds | 2.5 miles | 700 ft of elevation gain | The first part of the Hamilton Mountain Hike but the turnaround points is the pool and falls. As a bonus, there’s a playground at the trailhead!
Wind Mountain | 2.7 miles | 1100 ft of elevation gain | Steep but short, nice gorge views to the east and west, and possesses special historical meaning as a sacred site for “Spirit Quests” for indigenous peoples.
Mirror Lake | 4.5 miles | 600 ft of elevation gain | A mostly shady hike with an easy-to access-trailhead next to Skibowl. This is basically the first part of the Tom, Dick, and Harry Mtn hike. A spacious (and usually busy) trail.
Beacon Rock | 1.5 miles | 600 ft of elevation gain | Is it family-friendly? The protective railing will hopefully reassure concerned parents, and the hike is relatively short. The whole hike is one long and windy view of the Gorge.
Wahkeena Falls to Fairy Falls | 2.5 miles | 800 ft of elevation gain | Two waterfalls, a trail along a lively creek, a climb up a canyon, some good Gorge views, and, thanks to trees and high canyon walls, relatively shaded.
Lower Macleay to Stone House | 2 miles | 200 ft of elevation gain | Forest Park (Portland) is full of trails, but the quest along Balch Creek to the Stone House is a fun family tradition. This hike continues to Pittock Mansion.
