The Way to Love (2018) has been a useful guide for students in my undergrad theology course and for many others. It asks important questions about what it means to be human, to be Christian, to be hopeful, and to love well. Learn more about that and my other publications below.

The Way to Love: Reimagining Christian Spiritual Growth as the Hopeful Path of Virtue

By Matt Boswell
Foreword by Arthur G. Holder

"Love people." An oft-proclaimed rallying cry for Christians, but what does it look like, in practice, to love? We may believe that love is "the greatest" (1 Cor 13:13). Love may be our destination. But do we know how to get there? Drawing on virtue ethics, psychology, theology, and spirituality, this book offers a love-centered, hopeful vision of the Christian spiritual life.

The Quaker World

Edited By C. Wess Daniels, Rhiannon Grant

The Quaker World is an outstanding, comprehensive and lively introduction to this complex Christian denomination.

Matt’s chapter (25) is entitled: “Loving ‘That of God’: Participatory Love and the Quaker Way.” This chapter takes an historical look at how Quakers have understood the meaning and implications of a central Quaker faith commitment—the affirmation that there is “that of God” in each person—and proposes a Love-centered way of understanding this reality.

Matt’s contribution (pp 344-349) is entitled: “Review Essay: Agrarian Spirit: Cultivating Faith, Community, and the Land by Norman Wirzba.” This essay draws on Matt’s experiences hiking and looks back to Douglas Christie’s The Blue Sapphire of the Mind: Notes for a Contemplative Ecology as conversation partners with Wirzba’s book, all addressing the question: what does it mean to fall in love with the land we inhabit?
